That resume might look great, but chances are itâs not equally great for every job youâre applying for. âYou should absolutely tailor your resume to suit the company, industry, location, and other parameters of the role,â told career coach Michele Moore to Glassdoor . By only sending out one resume, youâre selling yourself short. A job description can only tell you so much. What is the company culture like? Are employees satisfied with their pay and benefits ? What is the average salary of someone in your position? All of these questions can be answered by reading Glassdoor reviews of companies, where current and former employees can give you the inside scoop. You see the perfect job description, get your resume and cover letter, and quickly apply. Week go by and you donât hear anything back, so you l ook back at the job description . âFluent Japanese is a must.â Oops! Missed that one. Trying to save time when you read through job descriptions only costs you more time in the end, of wasted time and energy updating your resume and writing a cover letter. Read carefully! âAt least 70 percent if not 80 percent, of jobs are not published,â told Matt Youngquist, the president of Career Horizons , to NPR . Youngquist says that job seekers waste time surfing the internet when many times, itâs talking to employers and leveraging personal connections that get your foot in the door. While some may say that âthe cover letter is dead,â itâs important to remember that is from a hiring managerâs perspective.
